Dog training processes – defining phases

“Defining phases in dog training processes”

Dog training is an essential process for any dog owner, as it allows them to build a strong bond with their pet while also ensuring that the dog is well-behaved and obedient. There are several phases in the dog training process, each of which is important in its own way.

The first phase of dog training is the socialization phase.

This is when a puppy is introduced to new people, animals, and environments. Socialization is very important because it helps the puppy to become comfortable, calm and confident in different situations, which will make training and living with the dog a lot easier in the future. Dig in to it, do not miss it, do not »let it pass by«. It is the ground phase for a better life of a dog.

The second is a the basic obedience phase

This is when a dog is taught basic commands such as sit, stay, come, and heel, or whatever other usefull basic command, that could be used dailly in life. Obedience training is important because it allows the dog to understand what is expected of them and to respond appropriately to commands.

The third phase  is the advanced training phase

This is when a dog is taught more advanced commands and behaviors such as agility training, tracking, search and rescue,… Advanced training is important because it allows the dog to develope and use their natural abilities and instincts in a constructive way. This way they get a fully active and interesting life.

The fourth and final is the maintenance phase

This is when a dog is reminded of the commands and behaviors they have learned and to keep them fresh in their mind. Maintenance training is important because it keeps the dog’s skills sharp and prevents them from forgetting what they have learned.

In conclusion, the most important phases in dog training process are socialization, obedience, advanced and maintenance phases. All four phases play a crucial role in ensuring that the dog is well-behaved, obedient, and able to use its natural abilities in a constructive way. It is crucial that dog owners take the time to understand and implement these phases in their dog’s training in order to have a well-trained, happy, and healthy companion.

Socialization of a dog

 ofPropper Socialization of a dog

Socialization of a dog – what is it and what do you need to be aware of?

Socialization of a dog is a proces where we introduce the environment to our dog and slowly start adjusting the dog to “our world”. The process of socialization should start immediately after we accept a new familly member (a dog) in the house. The socialization of a dog should be done properly, which means, that dog needs to get as many pleasant experiences as possible in different sittuations, on different places, at different times, under different conditions, with different people and other animals. It is a really important part of raising of our dog.

Succesfull socialization of a dog is the basic element in dog’s raising procedure. With propper and correct process, our dog will stay calm in different sittuations of his life, because he will learn how to handle them without stress. During the proces it is also very important, that we establish strong and trustfull connection among ourself and a dog. This way dog will trust us and will get good opportunity to grow in to calm and confident dog.

Unsocialized dogs can feel fear, anxienty or agression, when they grow. It can easily lead them in to behavioral dissorder, when they grow up. It can be treated later, but costs a lot more effort and time, as when we put him through the socialization process on time.

Socialization consists of different sittuations. To name only few of them:

  • Introducing the dog to unknow people and animals
  • Visiting different locations ( restaurant, car, vet, shop, dog’s park, market place,…)
  • Exposing to different smells, sounds, lights, sights (thunders and lightnings, horns, trucks,…)
  • Walking on different materials (glass, plastic bottles, tiles, sand, escalaitors, wood,…)
  • Swimming
  • Being alone
  • and many more…

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT, THAT SOCIALIZATION PROCESS IS DONE STEP BY STEP AND IS KEPT SLOW AND GENTLE. Start with small and light effects. Increase it only, when your dog completely accepts the previous level.

When can we start with the socialization process?

The breeder should already start with basic training, when puppy is 3 weeks old. The main and most important socialization period is when pups are between 8 weeks and 4 months old (ussually they enter our lives at the age of 8 weeks, if we decide for a puppy). This is the period, when pups are not so easily scared and cautious yet. It means that it is the most suitable period for exploring something new and same time getting pleasant experiences. Help them exploring, but not too much…

Socialization process takes a lot of effort for us, but it is very important “investment”. It also requires certain ammount of understanding of a dog’s behaviour. Soon you will find details about how to propperly socialise your dog in my new book, or as video tutorials. Both of them you can find in our shop. Click here to check, what we have to offer you. It is important opportunity for you and your dog, do not miss it.

Is breed important?

How important is the breed, when you are choosing a dog is another question, that has no unique, simple answer.

Through many years, humans have adapted dogs to ourselfs on that level, that we can now almost choose a dog, that we want. Smart, slow, fast, with antialergic fur, looking nice, large, small, with low- or high-energy level, adjusted for living in appartment or outside, you can even choose a purpose…just name it and you will get it.  The dog’s breeds are created to put dogs with simmilar physical an psychological characteristics in to the different “sectors”. It everything seems nice and usefull…but…we should not forget on the other hand, that it is hard to supervise such a selective breeding processes all over the world. Therefore such a selective breeding brought us also bunch of side effects which are shown as a predispositions for diseases, body malfunctions, psychological problems. Although this is a subject of another endless discussion of wrong and right, we need to be awared of it.

It is very important, that we choose a dog, which will be in accordance to our lifestyle. And in this stage it is nice to have a general informations about main characteristics of a breeds. It makes our decision easier. It does not mean, that we need to choose a pure breeded dog, not at all. It can easily be mixed breeded.

If we are getting an adult dog, we can see and estimate his physical and psycological condition, so it is easier to deicide about suitability of the dog according to our lifestyle. In this case breed is not so important, because we already see, what kind of a dog we are getting.

How can viruses be transmitted among dogs?

Have you ever met someone with a dog, who said:” Oh, let them get to know each other, they are so cool sniffing each other…” ? Did you let your dog snififng other dog, which you do not know? Maybe it is not so cute, as it looks like. You have to be awared, that dog’s viruses can be transmitted on different ways, such as:

  • Direct contact (sniffing, licking,…)
  • Direct contact through open wounds
  • Insects and animal bites
  • drinking contaminated mother’s milk
  • Eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water
  • Breathing airborne viruses

My first suggestion is, to use a common sense. It is very important to supervise your dog as much as possible, when he is still a puppy. Supervision prevent your dog to get in direct, close contact with unknown dogs, or contaminated food or drink, which can prevent unnecessary problems. Even when you know the dog and the owner, it is still not completely safe. Letting your dog unsupervised untill he is raised could not only affect dog’s health, but could also influence on his behaviour.  And again, use common sense.
